Prerequisites and Corequisites

Most General Chemistry courses have both prerequisites and corequisites.  The requirements are enforced by the student registration system. Students who wish to bypass any prerequisite or corequisite are urged to do so well in advance of the registration period.

Prerequisites

Math 1113 is a prerequisite / corequisite for all General Chemistry courses: 1210, 1211, 1311, or 1411.

  • Exemption.  Students may obtain an exemption to this prerequisite by taking and passing the Mathematics Exemption Test, which is administered by the Math Department.  A score of 16 or better is required.  Testing is managed by the University Testing Services at https://testing.uga.edu/site/content_page/math-placement-exam.  Note that the Chemistry Department does not administer this test.
    • IMPORTANT. The placement tests are scored only on Tuesday, then it takes one week or longer for the score to post on Athena.  Students seeking to take the exemption test to bypass Math 1113 as a General Chemistry prerequisite MUST allow for this.  The Chemistry Department does not grant waivers of this requirement.
  • Co-Enrolling.  Although it is technical permissible, students are strongly encouraged AGAINST co-enrolling in CHEM 1211 and MATH 1113.
    • Historical data shows that 60% of students who co-enroll eventually fail or withdraw from CHEM 1211.
    • Students who take MATH 1113 prior to taking CHEM 1211 get better grades in CHEM 1211.
    • Students who take MATH 1113 and CHEM 1210, then CHEM 1211 the following semester, get much better grades in CHEM 1211.
Transfer Students

Students who wish to complete a prerequisite or corequisite at another school must follow specific policies.

  • Completion. A prerequisite course at another school must be completed prior to registering for the subsequent course at UGA.  The Chemistry Department does not offer a waiver of this requirement.
  • Lecture / Lab Pairs.  Students taking a chemistry course at another school must take and pass both the lecture and the lab at their school.  You cannot take the lecture at one school and the lab at another. The Chemistry Department does not offer a waiver of this requirement.
Lecture / Lab Corequisites

The lecture and its corresponding lab course must be taken concurrently (CHEM 1211 and CHEM 1211L, CHEM 1412 and CHEM 1412L, etc.)

  • Re-taking a course. If you have taken and passed the lecture part of a Chemistry course pair, but did not pass the lab (or vice-versa), you may obtain an Override from the Department to allow you to register without the corequisite. Details can be found here.
    • IMPORTANT. Obtaining an override only allows you to execute the registration process in Athena without the corequisite.  It does NOT give you access to a specific section, and it does NOT guarantee that a seat will be available.

Contact Us

Requests for information or support are handled through email exchange with the General Chemistry Administrator.  Send all email to chemreg@uga.edu .  Do NOT send requests to any other email address: doing so will delay your support by 2 to 5 business days.

Allow one full business day for a reply. If, for example, you send a request at 6 PM on a Wednesday, it will be received the following morning, and a reply can be generally expected one business day later, which would be Friday morning. Do not send additional emails on the same topic: this will delay your support by 1 to 3 business days.

You must include your full name, MyID, and 810 number on all email.  If any of this information is missing, the email will be returned without action, resulting in a delay.

All credit transfer and overrides require that you attach a copy of your transcript. If you do not have an official transcript yet, you may send a screen shot of the unofficial grade report or online transcript.  The screen shot must show the following information:

  • Name of the institution.
  • Name of the student
  • Year and semester
  • The course number (e.g. “CHEM 3456”) and title (e.g. “Inorganic Chemistry”).
  • Grade

If the transcript is not attached, the email will be returned without action, resulting in a delay.
