Designing MOF Nanopesticides – from Root to Leaf

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted increasing interest as potential carriers for pesticide delivery because their composition, porosity, surface chemistry, and degradation behavior can be chemically tuned. However, their performance in agricultural environments depends on more than cargo loading alone. Factors such as framework stability, surface interactions, environmental exposure, and local biological conditions may all influence how and when an active ingredient is released.

This seminar explores how coordination chemistry and materials design can inform pesticide delivery across complex biological and environmental settings. Particular attention is given to the relationship between metal–linker chemistry, framework stability, surface functionality, and stimulus-responsive release, as well as the challenge of translating controlled release behavior into meaningful biological performance. 

Looking forward, future MOF-based nanopesticide design may focus on improving release selectivity and environmental compatibility. Integrating multiple chemical or biological cues could offer better control over when and where active ingredients are released, while framework stability and material fate remain important design considerations.
