Rheology is a complex field and includes a wide scope of study. Most chemical reactions do not experience notable rheological behavior, however when considering reactions such as suspensions and polymerization, rheology becomes an important factor, due to the unique visco-elastic behavior of these systems. These class of materials experience different responses to stress and strain, thus leading to changes in viscosity and modulus which can be correlated to the reaction the material is undergoing. Using this phenomenon, is it possible to observe degradation, reaction rates and changes in physical properties. This presentation is a literature overview of the process of rheology, the types of measurements obtained, and examples in the literature of rheology being used to study reactions of polymeric materials.
